What do you think of this Boohoo deal?+20 points

Although technically a great deal, the Boohoo group (Boohoo, Pretty Little Thing and Nasty Gal are absolutely atrocious for actually paying their garment workers properly, their UK-based factories have been found to be paying their workers as low as £3.50 an hour (slave labour). Not only that but the products are horrendous quality and aren't good value for money beyond a few months of wear. Definitely think we all need to be supporting and putting our money into businesses that actually care about the environment and their workers, and that actually provide value quality items whether a great deal/in sale or not, not the opposite.

There's no doubt that Boohoo had a problem with its supply chain.

They were punished for it when almost £2bn was wiped off the value of their shares.

Since then Boohoo has taken strong action, pledging to improve its governance, and to be more focused on supply chain compliance. Boohoo is currently investing £10m to improve conditions in factories in Leicester, where 40% of its clothes are made.

I think it’s now time to give Boohoo their due, and to stop kicking them when they’re down.

As Anne Critchlow, an analyst at SG, wrote: “We view the recent share price fall as a buying opportunity and consider this week’s supply chain/low-pay controversy to be an isolated incident. We are also reassured to see Boohoo taking strong action to limit the risk of future controversies.”

Boohoo doesnt make any of their clothes it is all bought from third party sellers, majority in Leicester, the third parties decide how much they pay staff not Boohoo. Do your research before commenting such rubbish.

Johnny Thank you for sharing and making me aware! I still do not wish to support this brand until these actions do come into force- all too often promises are made without real evidence of action and change (i.e.- Primark's promise of paying garment workers for already made clothes during the pandemic, instead having a 'support fund' which did not cover these wages). Additionally, the model of Boohoo's mass production do not fare well with the environment and their poor quality products does not either. I believe quality products would be better value than these often extortionately cheap ones and the pumping out of constant sales, new collections and products is not sustainable. Very pleased to see action taken on investing into its third-party suppliers but not for the next to no action into improving its environmental footprint.

"...next to no action into improving its environmental footprint...." is not really accurate. Boohoo are making a genuine effort and recognise that they can – and must – do more.

As they say:

We are making progress, but we still have a long way to go. We are ambitious – we want to significantly reduce our environmental impact and make a positive social impact throughout our supply chain.

Here's some of what they are doing already .

(Source: https://www.boohoo.com/page/sustainability-guide.html)

  • We donate over 100,000 sample garments per year to local charities.
  • At boohoo we believe in supporting local charities and communities. We have over 20 local charities that we help support on a monthly basis.
  • We recycle all faulty products to our partner reGAIN.
  • Our recycling partner reGAIN recycles thousands of garments per month.
  • We hold regualr SWAP SHOPS and sample sales for our staff to repurpose samples.
  • Our dispatch bags are made from recycled content and are recyclable.
  • We have gone paperless with all our returns.
  • As a member of the Sustainable Clothing Action Plan, we are working with other brands to help reduce our environmental impact.

Johnny Again thank you for sharing, I am aware of these initiatives that are stated in their annual reports and you are right, they are steps in the right direction and are far better actions than other brands. However, my issues revolve around their product quality, longevity and their marketing and promotion encouraging overconsumption. If you have purchased their clothes before as I have, you may be aware of the poor quality and sizing (I have always been disappointed) hence my previous point of value and product quality. Additionally, their marketing strategies encourage overconsumption among consumers- especially amongst their core younger target demographic. Moreover, typically clothing overconsumption leads to more frequent divestment/ disposal. I am actually currently studying a Masters in Marketing and have extensively studied fast-fashion brands such as Missguided, Shein and The Boohoo group so know that these initiatives are all well and good and I am happy to see them. However the overriding areas they need to focus on are its product quality, longevity and the environmental impact of their mass production (such as intensive water and pesticide usage in cotton growing, chemical dyes, synthetic fibres and petrochemical use). So until these are truly addressed- i.e.- from 'we want to significantly reduce our environmental impact' to we are reducing and have reduced, I will be putting my money to the ones who are. I would like to leave this here, but I appreciate the time spent researching and replying so thank you, and I hope our responses pose as interesting reading for others to follow and learn from!

There is a fantastic report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation about the impacts of the fashion industry and what are the solutions- so is a great read if interested! https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/publications/a-new-textiles-economy-redesigning-fashions-future

Happy deals posting,

Rachel.
