Transforming a small bathroom into a pretty place can feel like an impossible task - due to obvious reasons such as lack of space. However, one mum has managed to achieve a stunning transformation using bargains from Shein, B&M and charity shops.

Eszter Platthy, 44 from Stockport who is a mum of two and works as a private house cleaner, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: ‘We finally moved to our own house in November last year. The house was newly decorated, nice and clean. However, it was not my style and I wanted to put my own stamp on it.

‘It’s quite common for houses to be painted in a magnolia shade, and that was the case with my property. I began thinking about colours for redecorating the house, but as a starting point I decided to try out a DIY makeover on the smallest room - the little bathroom upstairs.

‘I wasn’t sure how to go about it so I began with some research and got inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram. I liked how people had used small plants to add colour to their rooms, and also people were using stick-on floor tiles to revamp their floors on a budget. I hated the dark grey industrial-style floor so I knew that had to change.

‘When I was researching supplies and gathering inspirational materials, I knew I would need to stick to a tight budget. We couldn’t afford to spend a fortune, especially on a little toilet room. I knew that if I was going to buy paint, for example, it would be wise to get a shade I could use in other rooms of the house to avoid wasting any leftover paint.

‘I finally decided what I wanted to do. In the end, I only painted one wall in a different colour to make it more of a feature wall. I picked up some paint in the shade Stormy Sky from Homebase, it was £16 for the tub. I knew I would use this shade elsewhere on separate decorating projects so it was a good investment.

‘Already the room looked much better after painting just the single wall and leaving the others the original magnolia colour. It was easy to do as well. I only spent 30 minutes painting the wall, it only needed one coat and once it was dry no further work was needed.

‘The other main step was transforming the flooring. I spent some time researching online for good quality stick on floor tiles or vinyl which were easy enough to apply that I could do it myself. When I was researching patterns I had the colour scheme of grey-cream and light wood in my head. In the end, I found the perfect set and paid just £20 for the number of tiles I needed.

‘They had all kinds of tile patterns there so I was spoilt for choice. Generally speaking the pricing is between £3 and £5 for a pack. I recommend seeing how many you get per pack as you can get better value by buying the biggest multipack. Plus, it’s wise to measure up your flooring beforehand so you get the right amount of tiles.

‘I laid down the stick-on floor vinyl over the couse of two evenings after my girls went to sleep. I would say it took about three hours per evening, so six hours overall. After that, I was able to add the finishing touches.

‘I found some lovely little shelves in B&M - they were on sale, £4 for the 2! I also found some artificial and real plants while I was there, they cost £10 altogether. Finally I found a ‘toilet rules’ plaque in a charity shop for £2.

‘My husband helped to seal the vinyl with silicone after I was done. And he put the shelves on the wall as I can’t use the drill! But apart from that I did everything else myself. I’m very pleased with the results and excited to decorate the rest of my house.’
