History of Tape

A tape is any material that combines a backing material with adhesive. Depending on where you want to use it, here are various adhesives and backing materials available you can use. The main component of tapes is PSA or pressure-sensitive adhesive. It was first developed by a surgeon named Dr. Horace Day in 1845. Dr. Horace applied rubber adhesive to strips of fabric to create what we know today as surgical tape.

In 1901, Leukoplast, a type of adhesive patch was invented by the German company Beiersdorf AG. It was succeeded in 1936 by Tesa which is a transparent adhesive patch.

In 1925, Richard Drew of the 3M company invented masking tape after noticing that auto painters were having a difficult time making two-colour paint jobs or clean dividing lines. This inspired him to come up with a solution to the dilemma of the painters.

Duct tape was developed during World War II by Johnsons and Johnsons. The troops back then needed a tape that's waterproof that they can use to repair equipment and seal considers. The company coated cloth tape with Polyethylene paving the way to duct tape.

Today, the tape is continuously evolving with many manufacturers coming up with innovative materials, formulations, and applications to meet the needs of consumers.

How It’s Made: Adhesive tapes

Different Kind of Tapes

Today, there is a wide range of specialist and technical tapes being manufactured for professional markets. These vary depending upon the application. To know what you need, here are the kinds of tapes you can ponder from:

  • Strapping and Packaging Tapes. Reliable and tough polypropylene tapes are offered in stores. They are usually meant for general use and they are coloured in clear or brown. They are also bound for sealing which can also be purposeful.
  • Polyester Adhesive Tapes. These are the tapes usually seen in the electrical and electronic industries. They are designed to work that way. They have also met standards so they can be trusted to safely perform their function.
  • Self Amalgamating Rubber Tapes. If you are looking for a tape which can resist water, sunlight, corrosives and ozone, and then the self amalgamating rubber tapes are going to work well for you. They are meant for heavy duty uses so also include them in your cabinet.
  • Polythene. Polythene tapes are already seen in broader industries. On the surface, they typically peel clean. They are water resistant and they can also give a certain level of insulation for electricals. This is what they are good at.
  • PVC. PVC is meant for various industries all over the globe. For this kind of tape, there is a myriad range of options to pick from as well.
  • Multi-Finish Cloth Tapes in Black, White. These are the tapes for quality adhesive cloth tapes, gaffer tapes, duct tapes, and repair tapes. They are bound to meet the demands of whatever indoor and outdoor application you might think of.
  • Multi-Purpose Adhesive Foil Tapes. These designs are of high performance. They are mostly seen in the industries of construction, entertainment, industrial, plumbing, engineering and maintenance.
  • Paper Masking Tapes. If you are only going to reposition surfaces, and then the right tape to do that is a paper masking tape.

Personalised Printed Tapes

Tapes function for various purposes. You can pick from measuring tapes, packaging tapes, barrier tapes, among many other options. To enhance usefulness, custom tapes are also utilised. For businesses purposes, custom printing of tapes is also done. There are companies out there that do this for brand building. If you are considering it, these is where you can use it for:

  • For Packaging. Packaging tapes are used for products that have to be packed in paper packages or cartons prior to shipment. As that is the case, the tape will go wherever the package does. There are instances when the message differs against its intention. With a customised tape though, it would be easier to express handling instructions. Thus, there are companies out there that see this as an opportunity to promote their brand. They may also do this.
  • For Barrier. Barrier tapes are usually found in public places. Most of them are of attention-catching designs that can also go completely wider. They can be used for governmental agencies such as the police department. They can carry messages along with them including “Don’t cross the line,” or any other kinds of warnings for an enclosed area.
