Jamaica is an island that is located in the Caribbean Sea. The island spans 10,990 square kilometers and is considered as the third largest island of the Greater Antilles. It is also the fourth largest island country in the Caribbean.

Jamaica is previously inhabited by indigenous peoples called Arawak and Taíno. The island was under the Spanish rule in 1494 following the arrival of Christopher Columbus. Many indigenous people died of disease during these times. The island remained under the rule of Spain until 1655.

England which is later known as Great Britain conquered the island giving it the name Jamaica. During the colonisation, the country became a leader in sugar production and exportation. They greatly rely on Asian slaves and they fully emancipated all the slaves in 1838. The freedmen chose to work in plantations.

During the 1840’s the British used Indian and Chinese as their labour force to work on their plantations. Jamaica achieved independence in 1962. Today, the population of Jamaica is around 937,700. Because of the high rate of emigration of workers, the country is populated by various races including Chinese, European, Lebanese, Indian, and mixed-race minorities.
